He has extensive local and international experience in demystifying science and technology and making it accessible to people of all ages and cultures. He has created a talk, 'Is Mendeleev's Periodic Table the best scientific idea ever?', especially for the 'International Year of the Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements' and has done his 'Animal Storytelling' workshop throughout South Africa as well as in the Middle East.

    ABOUT SHIRONA PATEL

     

    Ms Shirona Patel is curious about the world and is passionate about working with academics and students to make research and science accessible and understandable to multiple publics. From telling the stories of dung beetles and pre-historic fossils to sharing new knowledge about the stars or HIV/AIDS, she enjoys piquing the interest of ordinary people through new creative technologies like video, animation and virtual reality.

     

    As the Head of Communications at the University of the Witwatersrand, she works with researchers in all areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The commissioning editor of a magazine and digizine called Curios.ty, she encourages everyone to always ask questions.

     

    She serves as the Communications Manager in the Office of the Vice-Principal at Wits and is a full member of Senate and the Senior Management Group.

     

    Ms Patel has also worked for several global clients in the education, healthcare and finance sectors, across Africa. She edited many publications, including a magazine called Lesea at the age of 22 and worked in community radio for five years (part-time).  She was elected as an ambassador for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s Africa online community in 2016.

     

    She has presented at Science Forum South Africa and the SciComm100 conference at the University of Stellenbosch in 2018. In 2019, she trained about 50 participants in a AAF19 workshop in Durban.

    ABOUT AISHA BOWEAisha Bowe is the founder and CEO of STEMBoard, a certified economically disadvantaged woman-owned small business specializing in engineering and development, IT services, program and project management, data management, ingestion, and analytics. At STEMBoard, Bowe leads a workforce of engineers and programmers in addition to managing client relationships as well as execution of multi-million dollar contracts with Federal government and corporate clients. Previously, Bowe was an aerospace engineer at the NASA Ames Research Center where she focused on miniaturized satellites and aircraft trajectory optimization. As CEO, Bowe leverages more than 10 years of experience to lead the growth and retention of STEMBoard’ s portfolio of multi-million-dollar contracts for agencies within the Department of Defense (DoD). Under her leadership, Bowe’s team of engineers, data analysts, and IT experts ensure agencies achieve their mission.     ABOUT DR MIHA KOSHis Scientific career is in the area of condensed matter, specialized in Magnetic Resonance imaging. He’s a co-author of the idea of MR imaging using the Earth’s Magnetic field as the homogeneous reference magnetic field. He developed methods for detecting flow and diffusion with MRI in the earth’s magnetic field. The articles have been published in scientific publications. He worked as an assistant in the Physics dept. at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. As post-doc he worked at the Lovelace laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. It is there that he experienced the idea of Science Centres. After returning to Slovenia it was his idea to establish the first »hands-on« science centre in Slovenia called Hiša eksperimentov (The House of Experiments). The centre was established in 1996, the first permanent premises were gained in 2000. Since 1996 he’s the director of the centre. He’s the author of many "hands-on" exhibits, several science promotion books, series of national TV show, yearly science festival called Sciencetival, school for making and running science shows, reach-out activities, science fairy tales ... He was also the chief editor of a magazine for curious children for 14 years. “Life is series of problems.
